A thoughtful guide to celebrating birthdays in Slack

Create a birthday ritual that feels personal, inclusive, and easy for your team to enjoy.

A birthday message is a small thing. Remembering someone, asking how they would like to celebrate, and making room for their preferences is what makes it meaningful.

Start with consent

Not everyone wants their birthday announced at work. Ask before adding someone to a celebration calendar, and make it easy to opt out without an explanation.

You usually only need a month and day. Avoid collecting a birth year unless you have a clear reason for doing so.

Pick a shared space

Choose a Slack channel where celebrations are welcome. Keep messages out of busy incident or customer-support channels, and let people join the conversation when they have time.

  • Keep the announcement short and friendly.
  • Invite a reply rather than expecting one.
  • Give remote teammates the same opportunity to participate.

Respect local time

A celebration should arrive during the team's workday, not in the middle of the night. Choose a schedule and timezone that work for your workspace.

Make remembering the easy part
